School Social Work

Listen. Support. Empower.

Sometimes we need a solution. Sometimes a new perspective. And sometimes simply someone who listens.

Children and young people spend a large part of their everyday lives with us. They build friendships, experience success and disappointment, navigate conflicts and find their place. We support them along the way.

What we can help with

Small concerns deserve just as much space as big ones.

We are here for students, parents and staff when it comes to social and emotional well-being in and around school.

Sometimes it’s a conflict with friends, stress in class or feelings of insecurity. Sometimes family circumstances, anxiety, exclusion or mental health challenges weigh on everyday school life. And sometimes you simply need someone who listens and helps you make sense of things.

Not only when things get difficult

Prevention starts before small difficulties become big ones.

Prevention is an essential part of our work. With individual students, small groups and whole classes, we work on topics including:

Conflict resolution Classroom community Bullying & exclusion Self-image Personal boundaries Social skills Mental health

Our aim: to strengthen children and young people in their own abilities, so they can increasingly manage challenges independently and constructively.

Looking at things together

Parents and staff don’t need to have the solution before reaching out.

Are you worried about a child, finding a situation hard to assess, or looking for support with social or emotional challenges? Get in touch at any time. Together, we explore:

What are we noticing?
What might be behind it?
What does this child need?
What could be a helpful next step?

Trust needs a safe framework

A trusting relationship is the foundation of our work. Conversations and personal information are treated confidentially and responsibly.

At the same time, the school has a responsibility to safeguard children and young people. If we are concerned about a child’s safety or well-being, we act in accordance with our safeguarding policy and the Dutch Meldcode huiselijk geweld en kindermishandeling (Domestic Violence and Child Abuse Reporting Code). We carefully consider any next steps and, wherever possible, discuss them openly with those involved.

Sometimes support requires a wider network

Not every form of support can or should take place within school. We work with other professionals at DISDH as well as counselling services, prevention programmes and other partners in The Hague.

If more specialised support would help, we find the right service together and help make the transition easier.

Just drop by

You don’t need a problem – or an appointment – to come and see us.

Our door is often open: for a quick question, a short conversation or simply a moment’s break. We’d rather take a look at something together early on than wait until a small difficulty has become a big one.

Students can speak to us directly, message us via Teams or simply drop by. Parents and staff are welcome to get in touch at any time, even if it’s not yet clear what kind of support is needed.
