The German International School The Hague (DISDH) takes pride in bearing the seal of excellence as an “Excellent German International School” and boasts a history of success in providing top-tier education. In our Secondary School I, we adhere to the guidelines set by the German Standing Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) and follow the curriculum of a rotating German state, currently Baden-Württemberg. This applies to our other sections as well (Primary School and Secondary School II).

Upon entering Secondary School I, the 5th grade begins with an orientation year, at the end of which students, together with their teachers and parents, make decisions about their further educational path by choosing between the branches of Hauptschule (general school), Realschule (intermediate school), or Gymnasium (college-preparatory school).

The aim of Secondary School I is to achieve a certificate of completion of general schooling, an intermediate school leaving certificate, or an intermediate school leaving certificate qualifying for admission to the upper school (Gymnasium). These qualifications meet the standards for German international schools and are recognized as equivalent by all German states.

Instruction is tailored to the diverse needs and abilities of the students and is conducted in the German language.

English is offered as the first foreign language starting from the 5th grade, and French as the second foreign language starting from the 6th grade for all branches, becoming mandatory from the 7th grade for Gymnasium students. Dutch is already taught as a compulsory subject in 5th grade, allowing students to have early language exposure and fostering their intercultural competence.

From the 8th grade onwards, history is taught bilingually in English, enabling students to engage deeply with historical themes in both languages and strengthening their language skills. From the 8th grade, students also have the option to choose computer science as an elective subject and to choose between the elective subjects of religion and ethics, reflecting their personal interests and values.

Our goal is to individually support and promote each child so that they can unleash their full potential. We accompany our students daily on their developmental path and provide them with a supportive environment in which they can flourish. The familiar atmosphere and manageable size of the school contribute to this.

Career preparations

The students of the German International School The Hague (DISDH) receive comprehensive support in their career choices. In the secondary schools, an experienced career coordinator is available to advise students individually and support them in exploring various fields of work. Furthermore, the school organizes a career fair every two years, where renowned universities from Germany and the Netherlands are represented. This free event offers students the opportunity to learn about study options and career prospects. Many parents give lectures about their own career at this event to provide students with insights into various career fields and support them in their career choices.

Media concept

Media usage at DISDH is an integral part of our educational approach. We promote responsible use of digital media by incorporating them into our curricula for interactive and illustrative teaching. We impart media literacy to enable our students to critically question digital content and navigate safely in the digital world. At the same time, we value a balanced mix of digital and analog learning environments to foster the development of various skills such as creativity and social competencies. Our teachers serve as important role models in handling digital media and support students in ensuring the meaningful use of digital technologies.

Travel concept

In the secondary school I and II, we organize exchange programs, class trips, and study trips for different grades. In the 5th grade, students participate in a multi-day class trip focused on acquiring social skills.

Every two years, class trips to various destinations within the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Great Britain, Ireland, and Germany take place. Exchange programs with Dutch partner schools as well as cooperating German international schools within and outside Europe are also offered. In addition to these mandatory trips, students have the opportunity to participate in additional voluntary trips and exchange programs in the sports and cultural fields as well as within the framework of our competitions.

resp. on two days until 3.30 p.m.

Full-Day Care with the School XL Program:

Monday – Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

School XL

On afternoons when regular classes are not held, we offer fee-based afternoon care as needed. This is under the motto “School XL Programme,” which is specifically tailored to students in grades 5 to 7.

The afternoon begins with a joint lunch break. Registration for lunch in the canteen is not a must, but can be booked separately to School XL if desired.Afterwards, students have the opportunity, under professional and pedagogical supervision, not only to do their homework but also to participate in age-appropriate activities.

In addition to the afternoon programme, DISDH offers a variety of extracurricular activities.

Working groups

DISDH extracurricular activities stand for fun, languages, music, sports, and lots of good spirits. Exactly what our students should enjoy hour by hour in DISDH extracurricular activities.

Room facilities

Interactive whiteboards are available in all classrooms, enabling the use of corresponding software during lessons. This allows teachers to access various learning apps and the diverse resources of the internet to promote learning success
